Twin Blocks
Prominent teeth can be associated with a lower jaw that is too small. In these types of case, part of the treatment may involve encouraging growth of the lower jaw.
A functional appliance is used to do this (Twin Block). The Twin Block makes the lower jaw bite in a forward position. Twin Blocks may also be used to correct a number of irregular bites. The Twin Block is made up of two parts. One worn in the upper arch or teeth, and one in the lower arch of teeth. Children may find it difficult to get used to wearing the Twin Block but in time most children will get used to wearing the appliance.
Your child's speech may be difficult for the first few days but within a week or so your child should adapt. We have found that reading a book out aloud with the appliance in place can help patients improve their of speech. Functional appliances should be worn as near to 24 hours a day as possible.
.
Always remove the Twin Block for eating, drinking and brushing your teeth. The Twin block should be rinsed under a tap and gently brushed clean.
Dr Perry will give your child more specific instructions on how to wear the appliance in the practice.
URA
This is a removable type of appliance that is worn on the top arch full time. It should be removed for brushing teeth, cleaning and contact sports. Children may
initially find speech difficult but with perseverance after 2-3 days the appliance will feel comfortable and like an extension of the mouth.
