Retainer

After treatmet it is vital that you wear your retainers as directed.

After orthodontic treatment your teeth will want to move back to their old positions. To prevent this you must wear retainers to fix your teeth into their new straight position.

There are two types of retainer that we use at Pearls, Essix retainers and Bonded retainers. Patients will have to wear one of both of each.

Fixed retainers

A small wire can be bonded (glued) to the backs of your teeth. This is a fixed retainer and is left in place indefinitely to prevent movement of the bonded_retteeth. When you are attending your own dentist for your regular check ups they will check the fixed retainer and should refer you back to the surgery if you're having problems. The fixed retainer must be kept spotlessly clean and Superfloss used to clean around the fixed retainer. You will also benefit from having regular visits with the hygienist to clean the retainer. However, you may need to get the retainer replaced ever 4 years or so. You can come back to the surgery to have this done.

Removable retainers

We use Essix removable retainers. They are made from plaster casts of your teeth. When you are fitted with your retainer you will be given specific instructions on how to care for it, how often to wear it etc.

You must wear your retainer 24 hours a day until advised differently by your orthodontist.

Essix retainers should last about a year if worn as directed. New ones can be made up by your dentist or you can come back to the practice for a new one.

Retainers are included as part of all treatment plans. We will replace/repair all retainers for the first year after your treatment has been completed. After your 12 month follow up period there will be a charge for all retainers.
